Launching into Learning
Principal's Highlights

Welcome back to school for the start of Term 3!
It has been so wonderful to see staff and students back this term, refreshed and ready for a wonderful term of learning!
On Monday, 24 July, our staff worked together for a day of Professional Learning and it was a rich and valuable experience. We discussed the vision and direction of the school for the rest of the year and how we can provide a creative, strengths-based, inclusive and Inquiry focused environment for our students. We would love to collaborate with our students, School Association and families, so please follow the link later in the newsletter to answer the question,
‘What type of learning community do we want to be?’.

It has been a great first week of term! As Principal, I try really hard to visit classrooms and talk to students about their learning. It is so lovely to have students enthusiastically and proudly show me what they are working on and hear about what they are learning. I am regularly amazed by our articulate, enthusiastic, confident and capable learners at Mount Nelson Primary. Each day I see clear examples of Inquiry, student agency, voice and valuable learning experiences. I am delighted to be part of such a dynamic community of learners.
I hope you can keep Wednesday, 2 August free for our Mount Nelson Primary School Event! Clinical Psychologist and founder of the Resilience Co, Lisa Ford, will speak to our community from 7.00 pm until 8.30 pm in the Multi-Purpose School Hall. This is part of a grant from the Australian Government’s ‘Student Wellbeing Boost’ for wellbeing activities. Tickets are free but need to be booked on the Qkr! app or by email to mount.nelson.primary@decyp.tas.gov.au
Kind regards

Student Voice
Welcome back and we hope everyone had a good holiday.
All the best to everyone who is going to Learn to Swim. We know you’ll try your best and learn some new skills. Our whole school Inquiry this term is around the idea of ‘Place’. Our whole school question is, ‘In what ways does our connection to place shape our identity, wellbeing and purpose?’
We look forward to sharing our learning with you at the end of Term 3!

Thinking about Kindness
What is Kindness? How can we show and use Kindness?
We have been using Talk Moves to explore a quote about kindness and think about what it means to us.
2-3CR then had a go at writing their own quote about kindness.

Student Achievements

Maia recently competed in the Youth National Rock Climbing Championships in Sydney.
There was bouldering and top rope climbing. Maia reached the top of five out of seven of the bouldering routes. She finished in the top 20 climbers for her age group.
She had a great time and tried her best and hopes that she can compete again next year.

Kinder Fern Garden Working Bee
A big thank you to all of the families who came to help out or donate items for the Kinder Fern Garden Working Bee recently.
The garden beds are looking wonderful, with a native fern garden around the back of the building and a newly established bee attracting garden in front of the kitchen window. The blackboards also have a new coat of paint.
Kinder staff and students are looking forward to caring for the gardens and watching our new plants grow.

Fruit Salad Making in 3-4-5S
In 3-4-5S we have been focusing on procedural texts in literacy. We needed to create our own procedural text based on making fruit salads. While doing so, we took photos of us making our fruit salads on our laptops. We then printed them and glued them on a poster with descriptions.

From the School Association
Welcome back to school everyone! It's already looking like a busy term for the school community and students.
All parents and carers are invited to a workshop with the school on Thursday, 10 August, straight after school (classroom to be determined) to discuss how we can support the school with its literacy focus. It would be great to hear how parents/carers would like to be involved by volunteering time, starting new projects, or donations to upgrade readers for our students.
On Wednesday, 30 August, we will be selling fun socks and chocolates for students to purchase something special for the fathers and special people in their lives for Father's Day.
Save the date - Saturday, 2 September, for a fun night for all parents and carers with live music, woodfired pizzas, yummy desserts, and a Mount Nelson Primary School Signature Cocktail! We are looking for donations of 'Tasmanian products', pizza ingredients, and desserts. More information and ways to donate will be provided shortly. It's been a couple of years since we've been able to host a fun, fundraising night, we hope as many of you as possible can come along!
Cheers, Mary

Soccer Weekend Wrap - Round 5
Hello everyone and welcome to the round 5 Weekend Wrap!
This was the final grading round, teams will now start to be shuffled and moved into better suited divisions. This will take a few days so please don't stress that games are not on Dribl. We will notify your coaches and managers and they will notify you when the rosters are out.
Attached is the soccer season dates, so you all have them too.
The Wolves took home the win with 6 goals, a number of the Wolves players helping out the Ninja Turtles to bring home an 8-1 win. A big shout out to Elliott, Joe, Lars and Sam for stepping up to play a second game and helping out.
The Tornadoes had their first win of the season with some incredible team work to bring it home.
The Fireballs had a great game, really coming into their own on the field now with Max trying to help our newest player kick a goal.
Our Prep derby had the Devils winning over the Tigers.
Some of these players have consistently played two games and helped out where they can and its so wonderful to see the sportsmanship.
Thank you again, we will update you all on the rosters asap!
Kind regards,
Jaymie Barwick

Bird Nest Investigations in Kinder
Whilst undertaking an Inquiry about “What lives in the bush?” , Kinder Echidnas and Kinder Wombats have discovered that our bushland is full of bird life. We have been looking closely at currawongs and other native birds and their homes. We have created a people size nest in the playground for us to play in, we have made it soft and cosy on the inside of the nest with grass and leaves and the outside is stronger and made with bark and sticks.

Children's Understanding of Colds and COVID Research
This month a student researcher, Joanne Carnaby, from the University’s School of Psychological Sciences, will be visiting Mount Nelson Primary School to do a study on what children know/think about the common cold and COVID-19. All students from K-6 are invited to take part. Joanne will be asking students to answer four simple questions. The study will take about 5 to 10 minutes and will be run in class groups for those who can write fluently, or individually for children who are still learning to write (so Joanne can write down their spoken answers).
You will receive an information sheet to sign and return if you agree that your child can take part, and your child will also have the chance to learn about this study before agreeing to participate. All responses will be anonymous. You can choose whether your child takes part with no implications for their learning at school.
If you have any questions, please contact Joanne’s supervisor, Assoc Prof Nenagh Kemp, on 6226 7534 or nenagh.kemp@utas.edu.au, or Joanne at jcarnaby@utas.edu.au.
